This name is not to be confused with bottle-nosed dolphin, which is not a fish but a sea mammal that is protected by law. The bottom line is this: No matter what you call it, it is one of the most colorful and acrobatic fish that swims in tropical and subtropical water.

Know where to find them. Mahi mahi are found throughout the world, but mostly in warm (between 75 and 85 degrees) waters that are about 100 to 400 feet deep. They are primarily found in the gulf stream. Weed lines or floating objects, such as buoys, are their favorite spots to attract food. Look for flying fish, as mahi mahi will probably be nearby. They never stray too far from their food source.
