How to Become a Doctor in NZ
If you are interested in becoming a doctor in New Zealand the process might not be as complex as you think. If you go to school in New Zealand to become a doctor you are not required to take big medical exams required of doctors whose training takes place outside New Zealand. Instead, you complete the required training and the exams that are normal part of the medical education in New Zealand.

Go to school for medicine in New Zealand. You will need to take the undergraduate course of study in medicine. You begin by pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences your first year. At the end of the first year you take a test to gain entry to the medicine and surgery program. The total time required in college is six years. Your sixth year is spent in a hospital as a trainee intern. When you graduate you earn a Bachelor's of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB).

Become a house officer for two years. A house officer, more commonly known as a house surgeon, is similar to an intern in the United States. You will spend your time as a house surgeon doing rotations in the hospital in different areas and specialties.

Pick a specialty. Your time as a house surgeon should give you exposure to all of the specialties in medicine. You should use this time to pick which specialty you want to focus on as a doctor.

Become senior house officer for a few years. Once you have picked a specialty you will apply to become a senior house officer. This will give you time to get more training in your selected specialty so that you can apply to become a registrar.

Apply to become a registrar. When you apply to become a registrar you enter a training program with studying and exams in your specialty. You will continue to work while you are in the registrar program, which lasts two years. When you complete the program you are officially a general practitioner or specialist.
