If you have a secret obsession or interest and you have been dying to discuss it with other like-minded individuals, there is no easier way to do that today than by starting a chat room about your favorite obsession. Plenty of sites online offer free hosting for chat rooms and chat room accounts, and the process to sign up for an account on any one of them is something you can do in just a few easy steps.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with high speed Internet access
  1. Step 1

Sign up with a web site that offers free chat rooms. If you own your own domain name, your web hosting company might have their own free chat room features, so check with them first. If not, there are numerous web sites that allow you to make your own free chat room, like The Chat Shack Network, if you will have a chat room that stands on its own, or Chat Forum, if you want to add a chat room to your own web site.

  2. Step 2

Choose a user name and password. You will be responsible for changing the appearance and other settings of the chat room, so you will have to have a password to get into the system. Your user name will be listed on the "Admin" section of the chat room and usually cannot be changed later, so make sure you choose a user name you want to keep.

  3. Step 3

Title your chat room. When you are signing up with a free chat room service, the registration will request a title for your chat room. Try to put the subject of the chat room into the name. If you want to talk Star Trek, call it something like "Star Trek Talk." That way people will know exactly what the chat room is all about. If you later decide you don't like the name, you can change it at any time.

  4. Step 4

Enter a description for your chat room. Be specific in explaining what your chat room is all about. This is where you will tell people, for example, that you want to talk about the original Star Trek, and that any mention of "The Next Generation" is strictly forbidden.

  5. Step 5

Customize your account. Log in to your chat account and change any settings you don't like. You can change the appearance of the chat room, the text, images, and more. You can also choose whether anonymous chatters are welcome or if all chat room participants must be logged in. After you have customized your space, you are ready to start chatting.
