When working on an outdoor light fixture, it may seem that the simple task of changing a light bulb is more difficult than usual. However, standard outdoor light fixtures are relatively simple to change. You should always take the appropriate safety precautions, detailed below.

Step 1

Turn off the power to the light fixture. If you are dealing with a light that is motion-activated and turns on automatically, you will need to shut the light off at the circuit breaker. If the light just burnt out, allow time for the bulb to cool.

Step 2

Remove the glass fixture around the light. The style of the fixture can vary greatly depending on the type of lighting you have outside your home. However, opening the light fixture should be as simple as removing a few screws. Make sure you have a good grip on the fixture so that the glass does not fall and break as you remove it.

Step 3

Remove the old light bulb. While you're working inside the light fixture, you should also use the rag to clean out any dust, bugs, and other debris that may have built up inside the light.
