How to Make a Gold Dress

A gold dress of any style is always an interesting addition to any wardrobe. Gold dresses can be fun, glamorous, casual, dressy, bare or formal. There are as many styles of gold dresses as there are shades of gold. A gold sleeveless dress in a straight style to just above the knee is a classic dress that you can wear in many different ways. You can dress this style gold dress up or down, depending on your mood. A straight gold dress is fun to make and will provide a fashion boost to your wardrobe.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize your sewing area and plug in your sewing machine. Spread out the sewing pattern and cut the fabric to the size of the front and back panels of the dress. Iron the fabric if needed to remove any wrinkles so the cloth is flat and easy to sew.

    • 2

Test the sewing machine on a scrap of fabric to ensure the machine is threaded properly and will sew correctly. Then place the front and back fabric panels on top of each other (with the "wrong" side of the fabric facing out). Then pin the two sides of the panels together with straight pins. Leave room outside the row of pins to stitch the fabric together on the sewing machine.

    • 3

Start to sew the right hand seam of the dress together. Be careful to sew in a straight line. Avoid sewing over the pins, because this can damage your needle. Sew slowly and steadily to achieve a straight seam on the dress. After you have sewn the seam, remove the pins.

    • 4

Sew the left hand seam of the dress. Then remove the pins. You have now successfully sewn together the sides of the dress. Next, use a dress you currently wear to mark where the gold dress' hem should go. Then use gold thread and a sewing needle to hand sew the hem in your gold dress.

    • 5

Complete the dress by hand sewing the neckline of the dress to make a small turn over of fabric. If you have chosen a scoop neck pattern you are now done with the dress. If you chose a higher neck pattern, you will want to sew in a zipper in the back of the dress to allow you to open the dress enough to slip it over your head when you get dressed.
To insert a zipper, cut a slit in the back of the dress and sew the zipper to the two sides of the opening on the inside of the fabric in the back of the dress.

    • 6

Decorate the dress with beads if you want a more glamorous dress. You can sew on gold beads for a subtle accent or black or silver beads for a contrasting accent. You might add beads at the neckline of the dress and perhaps also in the hem area. Be creative --- you may add beads anywhere you wish on the dress.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sew slowly and carefully to ensure you are using the sewing machine safely. Find fabric that is well made and will create a beautiful dress.

  • Be careful to remove all straight pins used for sewing before you put the dress on.
