There are many different types of guitar amps, which means there are plenty of different ways to make your guitar amp sound good. Getting the sound you like can be as simple as adjusting the settings on your guitar and amp, though the room that you have your guitar amp in can also affect the way you hear the guitar through the amp.

1
Find a room that is not crowded yet not empty. If the room is too packed with furniture it will feel as if it's not loud enough. If the room is empty, the guitar amp may sound loud or tend to echo. Musicians refer to this as the acoustics of the room.

2
Plug the amp into the outlet and the guitar into the amp using the amplifier cord. Make sure the cord is plugged all the way in on both ends. If it is not, you will hear a buzzing sound from the amp when you turn it on.

The guitar's settings and tuning affect the amp's sound too. Its very important to keep the guitar tuned and set to your needs.

Set the gain on a level that you like. You may have to adjust it as you run through notes on the guitar to find the level that works for you. Gain and distortion cause a more ridged and heavy sound to your guitar. When you turn the gain up, you may want to turn the volume down to even out the sound.

Set your tone on the amp. When you turn the tone up it will cause you to have a more clean and clear sound with more treble from the guitar. Adjust it to suit your preferences as you play.
