Decide on the style of body that you'll design you formal wear to fit. Not all body shapes are suitable for all designs. The goal is to make the woman as alluring as possible. If you design an outfit for someone with large hips, draw the eye to the bust line. Use the design to hide flaws and accent other body parts. The goal is always to flatter the body and draw the eye's attention to the most attractive area.

Select they length of the formal wear. Many formal dresses are full length but today anything goes, even pant suits for women. You need to decide whether you'll have a mini, midi, full length skirt or no skirt and a pair of pants. Decide whether the formal wear is one or two pieces.

    • 3

Use sweeping elegant lines when you draw your design. Although some boxy cuts have made it to the hall of fame for designs, you'll find that most formal wear for women involve smooth, elegant, sweeping designs rather than sharp angular ones.

    • 4

Accent body parts with openness. Use the drama of an open back to set your formal wear design apart from the others or create a dramatic plunging neckline. Many formal outfits don't have sleeves, but your can be different. Some women prefer sleeves to hide imperfections in their arms.

    • 5

Choose the material that works best for the type of formal wear you drew. Some of the material for formal wear doesn't fit specific patterns. If you have a sleek dress that you want to cling to the body, then use a knit or other clinging fabric.

    • 6

Select accessories to enhance your formal design. When you add the accessories to your drawing, the whole outfit draws together as a finished piece. Keep the drawing simple with a simple outline of the hairstyle and no intricate details. The drawing is all about the dress.
