How to Eat With a Tongue Ring

How to Eat With a Tongue Ringthumbnail
Eating with a tongue ring is challenging at first, but becomes second nature.

A tongue piercing can show off your personality in an edgy sort of way. Compared with belly button piercings, tongue piercings heal much faster. However, like all piercings, infection could arise if your tongue piercing is not properly cared for. Although many people think that it is hard to eat with a tongue piercing, it really becomes second nature once it completely heals.

    Instructions

      • 1

Eat soft foods when you first get your tongue pierced. Soups, pudding and mashed potatoes are smart choices. Colder foods such as ice cream and yogurt help reduce the swelling right after you get your tongue pierced.

      • 2

Downsize to a smaller barbell as soon as the swelling goes down. This could take anywhere from two to three weeks.

      • 3

Chew your food slowly. Eating fast may damage your teeth. Refrain from really sticky substances such as gum or candy.

      • 4

Use a plastic barbell rather than a metal one when your tongue is completely healed. Plastic barbells are strongly recommended because they reduce the chance of damaging your teeth.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Always clean your piercing after eating to reduce tartar build up.

    • Do not smoke when the piercing is healing.

    • Do not bite the piercing with your teeth.

    • Always get your tongue professionally pierced with a sterile needle.
