Step 1
Eat soft foods when you first get your tongue pierced. Soups, pudding and mashed potatoes are smart choices. Colder foods such as ice cream and yogurt help reduce the swelling right after you get your tongue pierced.

Step 2
Downsize to a smaller barbell as soon as the swelling goes down. This could take anywhere from two to three weeks.

Step 3
Chew your food slowly. Eating fast may damage your teeth. Refrain from really sticky substances such as gum or candy.

Step 4
Use a plastic barball rather than a metal one when your tongue is completely healed. Plastic barbells are strongly recommended because they reduce the chance of damaging your teeth.
