How to Refill a HP Deskjet D4160 Printer Cartridge

HP 92 Black Cartridges

The ink cartridge is the most expensive part of owning what is a relatively inexpensive inkjet printer. Based on average home printing, you will spend about $250 on ink per year. Refill kits can reduce this cost dramatically for the HP Deskjet D4160 Printer Cartridge.

Things You'll Need

• Ink refill kit (syringe, ink)

Instructions

1. Remove the black cartridge from the printer by lifting the cover and gently pulling the cartridge out of its bay. Place it on a prepared surface that you have cleaned and covered to protect against ink spills.

2. Remove the sticker on the top of the black cartridge revealing the holes.

3. Fill the syringe with 5 ml of black ink and slowly inject it into the hole with the white sponge showing (topmost hole). Only push until you feel some resistance and then inject. Do not push the needle all the way down into the cartridge as this will rip the sponge.

4. Remove the syringe after injecting the ink and wipe off any excess from the cartridge (leaks happen). Reinstall the cartridge and run cleaning and alignment cycles to complete the refill process.

5. Repeat the steps above for the color cartridge but use 3ml for each of the color inks instead of 5ml. Yellow goes in the top whole. Magenta goes in the left side and Cyan goes in the right side.

Tips & Warnings

• Cartridge refills are usually more successful if done before the cartridge runs completely dry. Even though you have refilled the cartridge, the HP software will still indicate that it is empty.

• Make sure an purchase compatible ink to cartridge number 92 or 98 (black), and 93 (color) according to HP. Using ink formulated for other printers can damage the cartridges and/or the printer.
