How to Become a Tour Professional in Golf

Becoming a good enough golfer to earn a spot on the pro tour is about as difficult a job as there is in all of sports. Millions of golfers play the game as amateurs, and there are just a few hundred golfers throughout North America who are good enough to play on the tour. While the odds are long, it shouldn't stop someone with the talent and desire to succeed from trying.

Instructions

    • 1

Take as many lessons as you can as a youngster and a teenager. A great coach and teacher can pay huge dividends for a young golfer. A top instructor will fine-tune a golfer's grip, stance and swing and possibly make a difference in his or her career.

    • 2

Play as much competitive golf as possible when you are young. Play in local tournaments and compete on your high school and college teams. You will be placed in many high-pressure situations. The more you can get used to this, the better you will perform later on.

    • 3

Work on one area of your game above everything else. A pro has to be an expert in every area---driving, fairway play, bunker play and putting. However, build up one area that you can always count on and that will be the foundation of your game.

    • 4

Go to qualifying school. To make the Pro Golfers' Association (PGA) tour, you have to pass through qualifying school. Basically that means posting a low score against others who want to win a spot on the pro tour. There may be two, three or four openings. That means you would have to have one of the lowest four scores in a year when four new members are admitted to the tour.

    • 5

Keep trying and never give up. Most pros suffer many failures along the way. There are tour players who go 10 years or more waiting for their first win. Don't get frustrated. Keep working and keep trying once you have decided to make this your career.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find a sponsor to help defray costs. You will share your tour money with the sponsor, but he or she will pay all your costs while you are in the process of trying to win significant prize money.
