How to Make a Ceramic Magnet

Ceramic magnets are an easy way to personalize your fridge or your filing cabinet at work. They are also a great craft project for kids because they are so easy to make and make good gifts for Grandma or Grandpa.
All you need is some clay, craft glue and magnets. You can use regular clay or polymer clay (polymer is the best choice if you don't have access to a kiln, as it can be baked in the oven) and magnet buttons or magnet strips cut to the right size. In just a couple of hours, you can make as many ceramic magnets as you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a small amount of clay and knead it a few times until it is smooth and pliable.

    • 2

Form the clay into whatever shape or design you like. However, try to keep the designs small and light so that the magnet will hold.

    • 3

Bake the clay in a kiln or oven, according to the manufacturer's directions, until it is hard. Remove the piece from the kiln or oven, and allow it to cool. If you wish to paint or glaze your piece, do this now.

    • 4

Apply a moderate amount of glue to the back side of your clay piece, and attach the magnet.

    • 5

Allow the glue to dry completely, then use your magnet. If you find that your ceramic piece is too heavy, try adding another magnet.
