How to Stretch Ballet Shoes

It always seems that just when we manage to buy everything our children need, they grow and we must start over. With ballet shoes, though, we have a chance to extend their use a few more months by stretching them. There are a few ways to do this without hurting the shoes.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy leather shoes. Leather ballet shoes will stretch much better than canvas ones.

    • 2

Loosen or remove the drawstring. This should provide a bit more room for the whole foot.

    • 3

Have your child walk around the house in them. While ballet shoes should never be worn on the street, extra walking in the house can help stretch them out.

    • 4

Put a wooden spoon or dowel in them to stretch them. Either use the spoon to gently push the toe forward or place the shoe around the spoon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even if leather shoes are more expensive to buy originally, they will last longer and be cheaper in the long run.

  • Don't buy ballet shoes on the big side. Ballet shoes need to fit tightly so that the dancer doesn't slip or trip on them.
