It's an illusion--floating beads

L Johnson adaptation

Illusion necklaces are dainty, pretty and almost magical. In a choker length, they can fit snugly and give the illusion of beads floating around the neck. Or, they can drape in patterns and look as if the beads are sprinkled on the bodice. Pearls, faux pearls, crystals and all sorts of beads can be used. To create a floating illusion, string the beads on nearly transparent material.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Illusion cable (Tigertail, thin nylon-coated steel cable, or SoftFlex)
  • Faux pearls and colored bead assortment
  • "Hot Stuff" glue
  • Wire cutters
  • Measuring tape
  • Clasp

Cut lengths of illusion cable, 5 inches longer than the desired length, using the wire cutters.

  2. Step 2

Cut three or four more lengths of illusion cable, each 1 to 2 inches longer than the one before, to make a multi-strand necklace.

  3. Step 3

Decide how far apart you want the beads. 1 1/2 inches apart is a good distance. Use 4 to 6 mm size beads, and plan for an alternating, sequential or random color pattern. (Alternating: blue, green, blue, green. Sequential: pink, blue, green, silver, gold and repeat.) If you're doing a multi-strand necklace, each strand can have a different color of beads or a mixture.

  4. Step 4

Mark the places where the beads are to go with white correction fluid. (If it shows, it can be removed later with a fingernail.) You will use these markings for permanent placement of beads.

  5. Step 5

Slide one half of the clasp on the string at the end. Make a wire loop to hold it.

  6. Step 6

String the beads in the sequence you have designed by putting a small dollop of glue on the strand where marked, then sliding the bead over it. Continue until all beads are strung.

  7. Step 7
    Multi-strand clasp

End the strand with the other half of the clasp. If you are doing a multi-strand necklace, use a multi-strand clasp, with jump rings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call your local beading store to find out if they carry Hot Stuff or similar glue. Most bead stores carry all the supplies you need to make illusion jewelry and may even have classes teaching it.
  • Be sure you measure the spaces between beads and mark them so they'll be evenly spaced. Remember, once they're glued, they're permanent.
