Winter weather is hard on trucks, even dual-wheel vehicles like tow trucks and flat beds. Tire chains are also the law in some states during bad weather, and essential to getting up and over high mountain passes when the snow really starts to fly. If you want to get your load in one time and in once piece, you will have to learn how to install dual tire chains.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Lay the dual chains on the ground directly behind the dual wheel tire of the wheel that receives drive power, with any hooks or exterior traction bars facing down.

  2. Step 2

Back the truck onto the dual tire chains until the tire is situated in the middle of the chains.

  3. Step 3

Grab the ends of the tire chains and begin to work them up and over the wheel. This will take a little effort, since the tire chains are going to be fastened tight to the wheel.

  4. Step 4

Connect the interior side connectors first by securing the latch system on both ends of the chains. If there is a middle chain, make sure this lies in between the dual wheels.

  5. Step 5

Fasten the outside connectors to secure the chains to the wheels. Be sure the chains are very tight and the outside chain rests evenly along the rim of the tire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a bungee cord to tighten the chains if they are loose. Thread it through two lengths of chain, and fasten the ends together.
