How to Breed Rottweiler Dogs

When working with large breed dogs, such as Rottweilers, a little more goes into the breeding than just observing. To ensure a safe breeding for both dogs involved as well as the people caring for them, follow these simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Have both dogs stand on the ground, on a non-slip surface for better purchase. If the female is larger than the male you may wish to have him stand on a stair riser to get him to the right height.

    • 2

If your female is a first-time breeder, consider a muzzle as she may snap at the male or you, in her fear and discomfort. Even the best mannered dogs will bite when afraid.

    • 3

Have one handler at the female's head to hold her steady as the male mounts. Some females may act ready but slip out from under the male. This usually happens with first time breeders or overly aggressive dogs.

    • 4

Some assistance may be needed to help the male mount and aim. This could require you to hold his hips in the right position, hold the female's back end steady for him or even guide him and keep him penetrated until the tie occurs.

    • 5

Once the male has penetrated the female, his penis will engorge and the female's vaginal wall muscles will contract, thus completing the tie. A tie is when the male and female are "locked" together. This can take anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes.

    • 6

Once the male has stopped thrusting and seems to be resting, it is time to turn him around, so the pair are rump to rump. This eases the pressure on the female, who no longer has to support his weight. They will remain this way until the tie is complete.

    • 7

For large breeds, such as the Rottweiler, the handler will need to assist the pair once they are turned rump to rump. The handler will place an arm around each dog's hindquarters---under their back legs---to hold them in place and prevent injury to either dog.

    • 8

Once the male has finished ejaculating, penile swelling will decrease and the vaginal walls will no longer contract. The male will easily slip out. Keep the female in a separate area from the male to prevent irritation while she recovers. This could be another room, or a pen set up just for her.
