How to Make a Communion Veil
First Communion veils can be quite expensive, especially when paired with the purchase of a First Communion dress. So, to save money, make the veil yourself. Making a First Communion veil involves the purchase of a few inexpensive supplies, and it is very simple to do. Making the veil is a great way to start a family heirloom, and involving your daughter, granddaughter or other young lady in making the veil will make her First Communion even more memorable and special.
Things You'll Need
- Hot glue gun
- White tulle fabric (amount varies -- see Step 1)
- White 1-inch plastic headband
- White lace
- Needle (optional)
- White thread (optional)

1
Measure to find the amount of tulle needed. You should measure from the top of the head, where a headband would be worn, to just below the shoulders. Double the measurement, because two layers of tulle will be used to make the veil.
-
2
Purchase the tulle and other supplies at a craft store. Make sure that the headband is snug but not too tight. Buy 1-inch wide lace as well. The lace will be used to cover the headband and to trim the bottom of the veil. You may purchase slightly thinner lace for the trim if you prefer.

3
Cut out two pieces of tulle just wide enough to cover the length of the headband and long enough to reach just below the girl's shoulders. The two pieces can fall to the same length, or you can cut one a bit longer so that the veil has a staggered look.
-
4
Glue the tulle to the headband using a hot glue gun. Make sure that it is securely placed on the headband so that it does not come loose. If desired, once the glue is set, use a needle and thread to reinforce it---to do this, sew through the tulle and over the headband, wrapping the thread around the headband and holding the tulle in place.
-
5
Cut a strip of lace that is long enough to cover the headband. Glue the strip over the headband to cover where the tulle was glued.
-
6
Sew or glue lace to the bottom of the veil, if desired. If the tulle is cut clean and straight, you may not need to add lace to the bottom. If you choose to add it, you can either use the hot glue gun to attach it or sew it to the tulle -- both methods work well.
