How to Make Homemade Rat Traps Out of Cans

Being infested with rats is an issue; not only can rats be the bearer of various diseases such as foot and mouth disease, E Coli and salmonella to name a few, it can also be an expense. If you are a farmer, rats can end up costing you a bundle by raiding valuable food stores for your animals. If you are a homeowner, rats can get into your food supply and be rather reluctant to leave the premises. Without a lot of money, you can create effective rat traps out of cans.

Choose a can that's larger than the rat you wish to trap. A 32-ounce can, such as from soup or beans, is a good size for this purpose, for you want the rat to get its entire body into the can.

      • 2

Use a church key-type can opener or tin snips to cut into the top of the can, making a cross. Bend the flaps down to make an opening big enough to admit the rat, but not so big he can escape.

Place some meat, like bacon, in the can. Use a knife or a chopstick to push it as far back from the opening as possible when making a homemade rat trap from a can. You could apply some glue to the back of the meat before you put it in the can so it will stay in place. If you don't wish to use meat, try peanut butter as bait. This sticks well and can be applied with the end of a long spoon.

Anchor the trap in place so the rat can't tip up the can and dislodge the meat or bait. If you are trying to trap water rats, put the can in the water so that water partially fills the can, then lash it in place to a log or a rock so that the open end is above the water. When the rat tries to escape out of a can, it will not be able to and will drown. If placing the trap on land, anchor it in place with wire.

Allow the rat to starve, if the trap is on land. Bury the body to avoid the spread of disease.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Take care when cutting the can. The sharp points could cut your hand.

I think you still need more details on the way the rat is caught???? for example: what does the rat do when it enters the can and what's the opening in a cross meant to do.. thing of that of that nature.
