Making a homemade fishing pole holder is a fairly simple project that is inexpensive and easy to do. A great holder can be constructed from PVC pipe, which is simple to work with and durable and makes a very sturdy, transportable holder.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3- to 5-foot section of 2-inch PVC pipe
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Fine-toothed saw
  1. Step 1

Determine the length of the holder, keeping in mind the need to insert the holder into sand, mud or soft dirt. The end of the rod should be supported well above any material that may enter the tube from the ground.

  2. Step 2

Use the saw to cut the tube to the desired length. Most tube holders are about 3 feet long.

  3. Step 3

Cut one end of the tube at a 34- to 40-degree angle. This allows the end of the holder to easily slide into sand, mud, dirt or gravel.

  4. Step 4

Use a coarse-grit sandpaper to initially smooth any rough edges from both ends of the holder.

  5. Step 5

Taper the top of the rod holder, using the sandpaper, on both the inside and outside. Use progressively finer grits to taper and round the top of the holder. This is done to prevent damaging the soft cork handle of fishing rods.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use heavy wall PVC pipe for the project since thin wall is not a durable. Holes can also be drilled in the lower portion of the holder to allow any water that seeps into the holder to escape.
  • Use caution when cutting to securely support the pipe to avoid becoming accidentally cut by the saw.
