Dogs and cats can ruin a flower bed by scratching or running through the plants. In addition, dog and cat feces can contain germs that can make people sick. So, keeping dogs and cats out of your flower beds is very important. Fortunately, there are a variety of different and safe methods to use to repel these animals and to keep them from entering your flower beds.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rue or coleus canina sumcol 01
  • Dog and cat repellent containing methyl nonyl ketone
  • Motion activated sprinkler system
  • Chicken wire
  • Vinegar or ammonia
  • Chile powder
  • Chicken wire
  1. Step 1

Plant rue or coleus canina sumcol 01 around the borders of your flower beds. Both of these plants are attractive and produce purplish flowers. They also release a scent that repels dogs and cats. This is a long term approach to keeping these and other small animals out of your flower beds.

  2. Step 2

Install a motion activated sprinkler system. This is especially effective to keep cats out of your flower beds because cats hate water. Whenever they step into the garden, they trigger the switch to start spraying the water.

  3. Step 3

Place chicken wire on top of the soil like mulch around your plants. Cats and dogs will not like the sensation that comes when they step on the sharp ground. You can also purchase other types of sharp pointy mulch from garden centers that will deter cats and dogs from wandering around your flower beds.

  4. Step 4

Use some common kitchen products that repels dogs and cats in your flower beds. You can spray the plants with vinegar or place cotton balls soaked in ammonia on the ground around the garden. You can also sprinkle chile powder on the ground although some experts warn that the animals may be injured by the chile pepper if it gets in their eyes or other soft tissue. These measures must be repeated daily to truly protect the beds from interested dogs and cats.

  5. Step 5

Buy commercial dog and cat repellent powders that contain methyl nonyl ketone, an odor producing chemical that dogs and cats hate. 2 lbs. of this powder will cover an area of 500 square feet, but because this solution needs to be applied daily, it can become costly.
