Things You'll Need

  • 1 lb. smoked sausage, cut into slices
  • 1 medium size onion, chopped
  • 1/2 head of cabbage, cut into chunks
  • 16 oz. can of stewed tomatoes, any style
  • small can tomato sauce
  • pepper
  • garlic salt
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • measuring cup
  • can opener
  • large skillet or oblong pan

      Cast iron skillet

      Pour oil into a large cast iron skillet. You can use a 9-by-13-inch pan or similar cooking vessel, if you don't have a cast iron skillet.

      Place the sliced sausage in the pan first, then the cabbage and then the onions.

      Pour the stewed tomatoes over the sausage. Then pour the tomato sauce.

      Sprinkle pepper and garlic salt over the top. Add the water.

      Cover and bake in the oven at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately one hour. Check half way through cooking time to make sure the pan has not gone dry. When done, remove from oven and serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different types of stewed tomatoes to get the flavor you really like. Serve with buttered bread or rolls, mashed potatoes or corn. This makes a really good pot luck dinner for work or entertainment too.
