Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate the lawn to determine the design of the edging. Decide if it's more appropriate and appealing to edge in a straight line or in curved serpentine lines across the yard.

    • 2

Spray paint a straight or curved line about 3 to 4 inches away from the landscaping bed in the grass.

    • 3

Place the square spade at the outer edge of the spray-painted line. The spade should be on the side of the line opposite the landscaping bed. In other words, your feet should be on the lawn as opposed to the landscaping bed.

    • 4

Place one foot on the top of the spade next to the handle, and push it 3 to 4 inches into the soil at a 45-degree angle. Remove the spade and re-insert it next to the cut you just made. Continue this process as you work your way down the edge of the landscaping bed.

    • 5

Go back to the starting point, but this time, stand on the opposite side of the spray-painted line with your heels in the landscaping bed. Insert the spade at a 45-degree angle into the grass outside of the spray paint line. Lift out the sod and place it on the lawn in front of you.

    • 6

Use the sod to patch the lawn in other places, or add it to your compost pile. The soil at the bottom of the sod is rich and shouldn't be wasted.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do this when the ground is soft in the early morning from dew. You can lightly spray for a few seconds to soften it slightly. Using a very sharp garden spade will speed up the process and make it easier on your body by allowing the blade to do most of the work.

  • Don't try to edge a landscaping when the ground is hard and cold, or with a very dull tool.
