How to Refinish Cabinet Hinges

If you are looking for ways to update your kitchen without going broke, changes to hardware on your cabinets is the easiest and most economical upgrade. Stainless steel or nickel are the most popular choices for hardware. These finishes are new offerings, as older cabinet have a brass or gold-tone finish hinges.
Keeping the existing hinges will ensure that the doors will hang, open and close properly. Using a spray paint will give an even coat and allow the paint to get into all the cracks and crevices of the hinges. The paint should also be metal-specific in a finish that matches the knobs and handles you have chosen.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver, size and head dependent on your hinges
• Spray paint for metal application
• Metal cleaner
• Plastic drop cloth
• Small wire brush
• Gloves
• Face mask
• Safety goggles

Instructions

1. Remove the hinges from the cabinets and the doors. Keep the screws in a safe place. Do not paint with the screws attached; they will stick and damage the paint finish.

2. Clean the hinges so the paint will adhere to the surface. Choose a general metal cleaner that cleans all types or one specific for the hinges you have. Use a small wire brush to remove any rust or other build up. Rinse and wipe each hinge dry.

3. Use a face mask for fumes, goggles for your eyes and gloves to keep back spray off your hands.

4. Spray the hinges, with the spray head 6 to 8 inches away, making sure to get the sides. Allow the hinges to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

5. Turn the hinges to the opposite side and spray that side. Again, spray evenly, with spray head 6 to 8 inches away. Allow the hinges to dry.

6. Spray the screws to match the hinges. Allow the screws to dry. Only the screw head will be visible, so make sure to get the entire head.

7. Reattach the hinges to the doors and to the cabinets.
