How to Make a Stuffed Penguin Doll

This stuffed doll makes a cuddly gift for any penguin lover, or it can be a craft project to occupy a rainy day. The supplies can be purchased at any fabric store for about $5, or you can use leftover fabric you have at home.

Things You'll Need

• 1/2-yard black cloth
• 1/2-yard white cloth
• Chalk
• 1/4-yard orange cloth
• Sewing machine
• Thread
• Stuffing
• Hand sewing needle
• Plastic eyes
• Fabric glue

Instructions

Pattern Drawing and Cutting

1. Lay the white fabric on top of the black fabric. Face the outsides of the fabric toward each other (if your fabric has an outside and an inside).

2. 

   Draw an outline of a penguin on the top layer of the fabric using the chalk. Include the wings as shown in the diagram. Scale the penguin to the size you want it to be.

3. Fold the orange fabric in half and draw a triangle on it. This will be used for the beak of the penguin, so scale it appropriately.

4. Draw the two penguin feet, as shown in the diagram, on the folded orange fabric. Scale these to your penguin as illustrated.

5. Outside of the pattern lines, cut 1/2 to 1 inch out of the fabric that you drew for the penguin's body, feet and beak. The extra is for seam allowances.

Assembling the Beak

1. Sew along the two sides of the beak at the chalk lines. Turn the beak right side out.

2. Cut a slit as long as the unsewn side of your beak in the white half of the penguin body where the beak will go.

3. Slide the beak into the slit you just cut from the off-side of the penguin front. Pin it where your chalk line is. You should have the outsides of the beak and penguin body touching once they are pinned.

4. Sew the beak to the penguin's body along the chalk line, removing the pins as you go.

Assembling the Feet

1. Sew along sides A, B and C of both feet. Turn the feet right side out once they are sewn.

2. Stuff both feet with your stuffing. Leave room to close the third side of the feet.

3. Fold the open edges of one of the feet in and then press them together. Pin in place. Repeat with the other foot.

4. Sew the pinned seam of one foot together. Repeat with the other foot.

5. Sew along the dotted lines on each penguin foot as drawn in the diagram. Do not sew all the way to the back of the foot. These sewn lines will give the appearance of toes.

Assembling the Body

1. Lay the white fabric penguin outline on top of the black with the outsides of each touching. This means the beak you sewed onto the white fabric will be facing in.

2. Sew the two halves together along your chalk line but leave a gap to one side large enough to fit your hand through as shown. This gap will be for stuffing the penguin.

3. Turn the penguin body right side out through the gap you left.

4. Hand sew the penguin feet to the bottom of the penguin so that the toes point forward.

5. Stuff the penguin via the opening. Put stuffing in the beak and wing extremities first. Stuff as full as desired.

6. Fold the edges of the opening in the penguin's side over and sew the two halves together by hand.

7. Use the fabric glue to attach the eyes to the penguin's face.

• Small plastic eyes may be a choking hazard for children under 3.
