Step 1
Determine how much dirt you have in your chimney. For a lot of oils and soot you will want to use a flat cleaning brush. The flat brush will enable you more contact with the surface where the dirt sits inside the crevices of the lining.
-
Step 2
Use a wire brush to clean your chimney for little dirt accumulation. The wire brush allows you to do light cleaning which should be done on a regular basis.
-
Step 3
Choose a chimney brush that is the same size as the flue tiles. These tiles are the lining inside the chimney and are made of clay-like material.
-
Step 4
Use a poly brush. For metal chimneys, it is best to use a poly brush in order to prevent scratching on the inside.
-
Step 5
Clean heavy soot in the chimney with a double spiral brush. These brushes will have more bristles, which will enable you to remove more dirt from the chimney walls in less time than it would take if you used a wire brush.
