How to Make Doll Clothes Hangers

Whether you make doll clothes or just collect them, it's important to keep them in good condition. It's also important to be able to display them properly--not only to show them off, but to keep them looking good for as long as possible. These simple hangers are a great way to display and keep doll clothes fresh and pretty.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire coat hanger
  • Wire clippers
  • Wire pliers
  • Jeweler's metal file
  • 1/2 yard velvet
  • Satin ribbon
  • Sewing scissors
  • Fabric glue
  • Sponge
  • Doll shirt or dress
  • Tailor's measuring tape
  • Take your coat hanger and clip the ends of the wire closest to the twist that holds the hanger together. Throw away the twist and the wire hanger's hook. Carefully straighten out the bends that formed the wire hanger's triangle. Make the wire as straight as possible, making sure that the curves in the hanger's bends are completely straightened out.

  • Measure the shoulder span of the dress or shirt you are making the hanger for. This length will form the base of the hanger. Double this length, and add another 1/2 of your first length calculation to your total. This is the amount of wire you will need to create a hanger for this garment.

  • Take your shoulder span and multiply it by 3/4. This is the amount of wire you'll need for the first third of your hanger. Measure in from the end of the wire and make a bend. Measure the shoulder span from this bend in the wire. Make another bend going in the opposite direction so that a triangle is formed. Keep pulling the two wires together until they cross. Make sure each of the bends is at an angle of approximately 35 degrees.

  • Form one of the two wire ends into a hook to hang from a closet or small pole. Use the other end to wrap around the beginning of the hook, forming a triangle at the base of the hook. Coil the end at the base of the hook three to four times. Clip off any excess wire and file away the sharp end. File the end of the hook as well.

  • Cut strips of velvet that are 1/2 of an inch in thickness. Squeeze a line of fabric glue down the wrong side of the velvet strip and spread the glue all over the fabric's surface. Place the strip along the wire hanger, starting at the coiled triangular meeting, and fold it down around the wire, working your way around the hanger. When one strip ends, place the next over the raw edge of the last strip. Press the velvet together as you go around the wire, covering all of the wire, including the hanger's hook. Trim the edges with fabric scissors so 1/4 of an inch of fabric extends from the wire. Dry overnight.
