    • 1

Purchase barley seeds from your local nursery or home improvement store. Choose seeds that have been treated with a "seed dressing" like a fungicide to protect the seeds. The best type of seeds are certified seeds that are known to have a high germination rate.

    • 2

Choose an area of your yard or field for planting that is high in moisture content and has good soil. For better soil quality, use an aerating tool or shovel to break up the soil and get plenty of oxygen to the seeds.

    • 3

Plant seeds so that they are in dense groups. Lay out the seeds so you have about 20- 25 barley plants for every square foot.

    • 4

Maintain your garden and keep weeds out of it. If you have planted a large area, use an organic herbicide to keep the weeds away, but be sure not to get it on your young barley plants.

    • 5

Water the garden just enough so that the ground stays moist without soaking the plants. Barley seeds are very hearty and draw moisture from the ground.

    • 6

Harvest the barley when it has reached full maturity, between 40-55 days, by cutting the barley plants when the straw is brittle and golden in color. If you have planted a small garden, use pruning scissors or a knife to cut the straw. If a large field, use the proper harvesting equipment for the size of your crop.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can plant barley straw in different seasons, depending on the type of seed you use. For a winter crop, plant your seeds in October and for a spring crop, the best time to plant is January.
