How to Get a Degree in Early Childhood Education

  1. Step 1

Enroll in a 4-year program at a college. It will take a 4-year degree to meet the requirements and to actually earn a degree in early childhood education. An early childhood education degree and license means you will be able to teach any age from birth up to kindergarten. Be aware that you do not necessarily need a degree in order to work at a preschool or private company. However, you may get more pay and an easier time getting hired if you do have a degree. If you want to teach pre-kindergarten or kindergarten in a public school, you will certainly need a 4-year degree. Public schools are required to hire teachers with 4-year degrees.

  2. Step 2

Get an adviser. After being assigned one, ask him for a copy of the course plan required in order to become an early childhood education teacher. Take the basic classes such as math, the sciences, English and literature, and electives. Early childhood education classes will be required in your coursework. These classes include field work in pre-kindergarten classrooms.

  3. Step 3

Attend your classes and study often. Some classes require you to earn at least a C in order to pass them. Other classes require you to be present during most of the sessions in order to get credit. Some professors are very strict and require both of the above. It really will depend upon your professor. She should give you her expectations at the beginning of the semester or period.

  4. Step 4

Stick to the schedule of the course work required to become an early childhood education teacher. In 4 to 5 years, you should have completed all the necessary course work in order to graduate with a degree.
