How to Make Your Dial Up Connection Faster

You don't have many options when it comes to a dial up connection. It is impossibly slow at times---you could end up waiting upwards of an hour for a simple download, and if the connection breaks you have to start all over again. The only surefire way to speed up your Internet connection is to move over to DSL or cable Internet service, but there are a few things you could try to make your current dial up connection faster.

Clear your cache and saved Internet files before dialing up to your Internet service. Do this by clicking on "Tools> Clear Private Data" in Mozilla, and in Internet Explorer click "Internet Options" on the toolbar, then "General> Temporary Internet Files> Delete Files."

Only download one item or web page at a time. When you simultaneously download information from more than one website, the connection will slow down significantly.

Try a dial up acceleration service. The dial up acceleration program is downloaded to your computer and manages your file system to help optimize your dial up speed. For example, as soon as you visit a site for the first time, the graphics on the site are automatically compressed to a smaller size. If you've downloaded a few large files, it will compress them into smaller files while not in use. A big reason why dial up is very slow is because of all the files that sit in the file cache unnecessarily. Your dial up connection connects directly to the acceleration service, which then transmits the faster, more efficient Internet service to your computer. Expect to pay about 10 extra dollars a month for this acceleration service. Two examples of this modem-speeding product are the Propel Accelerator and Artera Turbo Residential.

Sign up for NetZero's dial up service and add the HiSpeed 3G turbo boost feature to your account to get things moving. You will pay about $5 more as compared to regular dial up service, but this feature claims to make your Internet connection up to three times faster.

Find a faster dial in number. Many times, there are some phone numbers in your local access number list that transmit data faster than others. This is a trial and error task, as you will need to try every phone number on your list to see which is the best choice.
