How to Clean Wool Sweaters
A warm wool sweater on a cold day is the epitome of comfort. Yet most of us balk at the "Dry clean only" label that most wool items have. Wool shrinks more than any other fiber, which can lead to an expensive mistake when you try to wash it at home. Never fear! Wool sweaters are one of the easiest wool items to wash by hand. 1
Fill the basin with cool water. Do not use warm or hot water since this will shrink the fibers. Place a small amount of detergent in the water as detailed on the package instructions.
-
2
Lay the wool sweater on top of the water and gently press down until it is submerged in the water. Lift and repeat two to three times. Do not scrub or twist the fabric since this will cause the fibers to pull out of shape.

3
Empty the basin and fill with clean, cool water. Press the sweater into the basin as before. Repeat until the sweater is fully rinsed of the detergent. Gently squeeze out any excess water.
-
4
Lay out your towel and place the wool sweater flat on it. Roll the towel and sweater up together and squeeze gently to remove as much water as possible. Unroll.

5
Lay the sweater flat on a fresh towel out of direct sunlight and allow to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings
If your sweater appears to be shrinking as it dries, gently shape it and pin it to the towel.
Though unlikely, wool may still shrink even if you are gentle, so avoid hand washing with very expensive items or items you cannot bear to ruin.
