How to Build a Bulletin Board

You can build your own bulletin board with scrap wood and some fabric. Add ribbons to create decorative squares on your bulletin board, or keep it simple with upholstery nails for an old world touch. You can customize the design and size of your bulletin board to fit the space and décor of your room. These instructions are for a 2-foot square board with ribbons and decorative buttons.

Things You'll Need

• ½-inch thick board, 2 feet by 2 feet
• Fabric, 30 inches by 30 inches
• Batting, 2 feet by 2 feet
• Spray adhesive
• Staple gun
• (5) 28-inch strips of ribbon
• Upholstery nails
• Hammer
• 4 decorative buttons
• Glue gun and gluesticks

Instructions

1. Spray adhesive on the front of the 2-by-2 board. Place the batting on top of the board and press down firmly. Spray adhesive is forgiving before it sets, so you can quickly make adjustments to straighten the batting if necessary.

2. Lay the fabric face down on a flat surface. Place the board, batting side down, in the center of the fabric. Pull the sides of the fabric up over the back of the bulletin board and attach it with a staple gun

3. Line two strips of ribbon face down on a flat surface, 8 inches apart. Place the fabric-covered bulletin board on top of the ribbon so that the ribbon is spaced evenly from the ends of the board. Staple the ends of the ribbon to the back of the bulletin board. Repeat this process with two ribbons fitting across the first two, forming squares on the face of the bulletin board.

4. Flip the board over and hammer upholstery nails where the ribbons cross. With your glue gun, apply decorative buttons to the top of the upholstery nails. Let the glue dry.

5. Make a hanger with the last ribbon by attaching each end to the top back of the bulletin board. Alternatively, you could hang the board with picture wire or hooks.

Tips & Warnings

• Build a larger bulletin board and use it as a headboard.

• The tip of the glue gun is very hot. Rest it on a fire-resistant surface.
