My husband is part Native American and loves Indian tacos so naturally I had to learn how to make them. A few easy to find ingredients and a few simple steps will have you enjoying delicious fry bread!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 10 teaspoons baking powder
  • 8 cups of flour
  • Oil for frying bread peanut oil recommended
  1. Step 1

First, I pour canola or peanut oil in a Dutch oven to heat up. This will be used to fry the bread. I combine the evaporated milk, egg and baking powder in a large bowl. Whisking the ingredients makes the mixture frothy and in turn makes the bread a little denser. I then add the sugar and salt.

  2. Step 2

Next, add the flour one cup at a time. The mixture will be a little dry. Add warm water slowly until the mixture is sticky again. Usually it takes no more than one cup but it will vary. At that point the dough is ready to be rolled out and cut for each piece of fry bread.

  3. Step 3

Fry each piece of bread about 3-5 minutes on each side. Remove from pan and let excess oil drain on paper towels.

Fry bread can be enjoyed with taco fixings or sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cutting a slit in the middle of each piece of bread will allow for even cooking and prevent large bubbles in your bread.
  • To ensure oil is hot enough for frying, add a popcorn kernel to the pan. When the kernel pops, the oil is ready for frying.
  • This recipe makes enough fry bread for 8-10 large tacos so plan on inviting some friends over to enjoy!
