A modern sofa can last for years to come. You can go with most decorating styles with this kind of furniture because it's so basic. This style is pretty simple, so the furniture might cost you less than a traditional sofa. It works well if you are just starting out in life. You might want to go with a mid century modern theme or you're just decorating a bachelors pad. Here is how to find a modern sofa.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cover it up. Most modern sofas will just come in one color: white. This is a common color in modern design. However, if you have boring white walls, this may be too much beige for one room. Many stores just offer the basic sofa & than an array of slip covers. These come in bright, colorful & even retro patterns. Plus, your couch will be versatile, you can even change it out with the seasons or your moods. These covers usually fit so snug that you can't even tell that it's a slip cover. These are different from those old, checked furniture throws that you might be used to.

  2. Step 2

Accent with stainless steel. Modern sofas are often low to the ground. This makes any area feel like a lounge or night club. Look for a couch that has unusual legs to it like stainless steel poles. This will also help tie your sofa into your appliances if you have a kitchen living room combo. You can even assemble these yourself to save money & it's not that difficult. Plus, how many of your neighbors can say that they "built" their couch?

  3. Step 3

Go inside the box. Modern sofas usually have very straight lines, no curves, no frills. The minimalist approach is a statement in it's own right. Your sofa might not even have arms.

  4. Step 4

Look for a modern sofa bed. These have come a long ways from those old pull out couches. Most sofa beds will now just lay down flat, transforming into a bed. This way our guests won't have all of those uncomfortable bars & springs poking into their backs. Some of these sofas do have a lot of tufting, buttons or even quilting on the cushions that won't be the best to sleep on. This combines form & function & helps you create a guest room out of nowhere.

  5. Step 5

Get a comfortable modern sofa. Sure, all those straight lines look great, but sit in it awhile & see how it actually feels. These sofas usually don't have a lot of cushions. They stray away from the overstuffed oversized furniture trend as well. While it will give your apartment a sleek feel, make sure that you will actually want to sit or lay on it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't let throw pillows clutter up your modern sofa. It can take away from the overall feeling. You can always sew one large bolster pillow that will go across the entire piece & provide lumbar support without breaking up the clean lines.
