Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • fabric
  • shears
  • crochet hook-size n or larger
  • basic crochet knowledge
  1. Step 1

For this project I used fabric from a left over quilt so it is 100% cotton. It has been washed with regular laundry detergent but no fabric softener. Dried and pressed as it is pressed the fabric is refolded as if it came from the bolt.

On the folded side of the fabric cut slits about one inch apart. Pull at the slits to tear the fabric. This will create the strip of fabric. I did this on the cross grain so the fabric strip are short.

  2. Step 2

Take a strip of fabric and make a slip knot at one end. With large crochet hook chain 3 loosely. Slip stitch in the first chain stitch creating a loop. Chain 2 6 double crochet in loop, slip stitch in top of chain 2

  3. Step 3

Chain 2 double crochet in same space of chain 2 and each stitch around At this point it may by hard to tell where you began ( the chain two) just keep adding 2 double crochet in every stitch and keep them loose. Keep going until you have the rug the size you want.

  4. Step 4
cutting a slit to add more strips

To finish 2 double crochet in the next stitch: 1 double crochet ½ double crochet in the next stitch. ;2 ½ double crochet in the next stitch: 1 ½ double crochet 1 single crochet in the next stitch; 2 single stitches in the next stitch; 1 single stitch 1 slip stitch in the next stitch. This will make it taper off. Tie off and finished.

  5. Step 5
pulling the fabric throught the slits

At some point you will have to add strips. This can be done in two ways. You can knot the strips together or over lap the end and fold over about ½ inch. Cut a slit re-line the strips and put the end of the strip (the one with out the slit) though the slits and pull tight.

on 10/26/2009 Great idea! Thanks for the extra tip. I would wash them first and put them in a dryer to pre-shrink any fabrics.
