How to Remove a Name From Mailing Lists

Not many things are more annoying than opening your mailbox only to find it crammed full of junk mail and not much else. If more people knew what to do to remove a name from mailing lists this would be a much less common occurrence, and while it doesn't take a mountain of effort to remove a name from mailing lists it does require some persistence and following up on your part.

1. Calling is a little easier than writing and should be your first effort when you are attempting to remove a name from mailing lists. Get the name of the company sending you the junk mail and use whatever means available to look up their phone number.

2. When you call ask to speak to a manager or someone in charge. Just talking to whomever answers the phone is not often successful when trying to remove a name from mailing lists, you need to talk to someone important. Tell this person your name and address and that you demand to be immediately removed from their mailing list and want confirmation sent to you in writing that you are removed, and that you will consider that your final correspondence from the them.

3. If calling is not successful you can write them a letter of demand that you be removed from the mailing list and send it certified mail to make sure that a real person actually receives it. In your letter you should still state that you want to a return confirmation that you are removed from their mailing list.

4. All problems with companies sending you excessive junk mail should be reported to the Better Business Bureau and in severe cases to the Federal Trade Commission. This will prevent rogue companies from harassing people and help to eliminate the tolerance for that type of advertising.
