Step 1
Decide where you want to go. Consider how far you want to travel and what time of year you'll be going. For most people, a public park is just a few minutes drive away. However, you may want to travel further for better scenery or a nicer climate.
-
Step 2
Look for sites online. GoCampingAmerica.com has a great selection of listings. You can also search Google Maps, KOA.com, or your local government website (which will list public park and beach sites).
-
Step 3
Plan some activities. Do you want to go hiking? Paddle on a lake? Play some volleyball? Consider what you will do yon your trip and remember to pick a spot accordingly.
-
Step 4
Make a reservation. Some sites now let you reserve online, but a lot of sites still require a phone call or hardcopy form. No matter what method you choose, it's always best to follow up by phone and speak with a real person to confirm your spot.
-
Step 5
Get Packing. If you're doing traditional tent camping, make sure you have an adequate tent in good condition. You will also want to bring some staple items sleeping bags (check their temperature rating if you're going someplace cold), flashlights, a first aid kit, food / cooking supplies, sunscreen, bugspray, personal care items, and, of course, a great pair of sneakers.
-
Step 6
Know the rules. Find out things like what pets are welcome, how big can campfires be, is there a curfew, etc. before you go. This will help you avoid fine or, worse, being asked to leave.

Step 7
Get out and have fun!
