When planting herbs, location plays an important part in them growing healthy. Soil conditions and light exposure will assist in your herb growing beautiful and trouble-free. Some herbs like sunny, dry, hot areas, while others herbs may grow better in moist soil, and not as much sunlight. So before picking a herbs to plant and grow, think about where you will like for them to grow in your yard.

    Here is a list of some herbs that grows best in dry soil: Aloe, Anise, Caraway, Chamomile, Lavender, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon, Thyme, Hyssop.

    A list of herbs which prefer moderately moist soil to grow in: Chives, Dill, Anise hyssop, Saffron crocus.

    These herbs grows very healthy in moist soil: Basil, Catnip, Cilantro, Lemon balm, Mints, Parsley, Valerian.

    Adding compost to any type of soil will add some needed nutrients. Well rotted cow manure is very good for added nutrients to the soil. Soil drainage is important in your herb garden. Even herbs that strive best in moist soil will not like waterlogged soil

    Watering of your herbs depend on the condition of the soil. Is it dry, moderately moist, or moist. For herbs that like dry soil, let a few inches of the soil dry between watering.

    For your herbs that require moderately moist soil, let an inch of the surface soil dry before watering.

    Moist soils herbs, let 1/2 inch of soil dry between watering.

    Sunlight is also important for the health of your herbs. Full sun, is at least six hours of direct sunlight. Partial sunlight is at least four hours of direct sunlight. Shade is filtered sunlight for part of the day. The filtered sunlight may be shaded by a wall etc. to block the light.

    These herbs grow well in shade: Lemon balm, Mints, Parsley, Saffron crocus, Valerian.

    These herbs in partial shade: Anise, Hyssop, Catnip, Chamomile, Chives, Cilantro, Rosemary, Saffron crocus, Thyme.

    These herbs can grow in full sun: Aloe, Anise, Basil, Catnip, Chives, Cilantro, Hyssop, Lavender, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Lemon balm, Valerian.

on 6/18/2009 Lemon balm will take off and become huge - as my poor neighbor let me know when she found it growing in her yard after mine was going for a couple years! Very hardly!
