How to Raise pH in Swimming Pools

When the pH in a pool gets too low, it will cause damage to the pool pumps and filter. Acidic water will corrode metallic items and be very uncomfortable to the swimmers in the swimming pool.

• sodium carbonate (soda ash) or caustic soda

1. The ideal range for pH in a swimming pool is 7.2-7.6. When it is low it is acidic and will be very damaging to the equipment very quickly. The pH of a teardrop is 7.4 so maintaining a pH of 7.4 will be most comfortable to the swimmers using the pool.

2. The product to use is sodium carbonate or commonly referred to as soda ash. It can be broadcast over the pool surface but be prepared for temporary cloudiness that should go away within 24 hours.

3. Add only 1-2 lbs at a time, allow to circulate for 1 hour and test the swimming pool water. If the pH is still low, add 1-2 more lbs. Continue this process until the pH is 7.2-7.6.
