Hockey stops are a specific way to stop while ice skating. They are primarily used in the game of hockey to rapidly stop and change direction to follow the play.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ice skates
  • Frozen pond or ice rink
  • Protective helmet and gear (optional)
  1. Step 1

Begin to skate, slowly gaining speed. While skating at a comfortable speed, set your legs about shoulder-width apart with your knees slightly bent.

  2. Step 2

Quickly turn your hips to the left (or to the right) about 90 degrees while keeping your upper body facing forward.

  3. Step 3

Shift your weight slightly to the hip that is forward, increasing pressure on the edges of the skate blades. The front skate should use the inside edge and the back skate should use the outside edge.

  4. Step 4

At this point, you can remain stopped or quickly change directions and begin skating again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to keep your shoulders squared to retain your balance while stopping. Overcompensating can cause you to fall.
  • This move requires practice to perfect. It is advisable to wear at least a protective helmet until you are comfortable.
