Step 1
Onions do well when the temperature range is 55 to 75 degrees F. Onion are frost tolerant when planted early while cool temperature prevail it will enable considerable foliages and root development. When bulbing starts high temperature and low humidity is desirable thru curing period. A constant supply of adequate moisture is necessary.

Step 2
Planting: Onions do best in a loose, well drained soil rich in organic matter. Onions are sensitive to high acid soils and grow best when PH is 6.2 to 6.8 A fertilizer of 5-10-10 is recommended. Compost tea may also be used. If you don't know how to make compost tea see my article on compost tea. Onion seeds should be planted 1/2" deep while sets are planted 1 to 2 inches deep. Space plants 3" apart and rows spaced at 18"

Step 3
Curing: Harvest onions when tops have fallen over and dried. Pick a sunny, breezy day to pull onion and leave in garden for a couple of days. Cure onions by placing them in a warm, well ventilated area til the necks are dry. This should only be a couple of weeks. Then store in a cool, dry, dark area.
