Parge a Wall
Parge a Wall

Parging a cement or cement block wall can transform a dull Unitarian surface into a textured paintable wall. After you parge a wall you can even create unique textures or a stucco look.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Portland cement
  • Sand
  • Water
  • Trowel
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

First throughly clean the wall you are about to parge. Be careful to remove any paint dirt or concrete chips. A power washer can be handy but a good wire brush works as well.

  2. Step 2

Once the wall is clean it's time to mix the parging mixture. Combine an 80lb bag of Portland cement with 65-70lbs of sifted sand. Once you have mixed these together and the parge is homogeneous begin adding water.

  3. Step 3

Gradually add water to the parging mixture until no more will easily absorb in to it.

  4. Step 4

Before you parge a wall you will want to do two things. First Cover the floor so that it is protected from any stray parging mix. Second take a wet towel and wipe down the wall. This prevents it from sucking moisure out of the parging mix before it can set properly.

  5. Step 5

Next using a wet trowel begin to parge the wall by smearing the parging mixture on with fluid circular motions and a steady pressure. Overlap passes to give a nice textured appearance. Start in a corner.
