Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Cut a square of canvas approximately 1" larger on all sides then the center of where you want your grommet to go.

Attach square patch on top of your main layer of canvas by stitching in place.

Stitch around the hole, about 1/4" to 1/2" back on the canvas to prevent further tearing or fraying.

  4. Step 4

Blanket stitch around the inside of hole. Go around several times, over lapping your thread, until the canvas edging of hole has disappeared.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps as necessary for the number of times you need to make a hand sewn grommet in your canvas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use larger needles made for the type of canvas you are using.
  • The thicker and stronger the thread the more stable your sewn grommet will be.
  • Practice first on scrap pieces of canvas before attempting to complete your project.
  • Insert metal grommet and stitch over to achieve the same effect.
  • Canvas and other thick materials may be hard to work needle through, be sure to use a thimble to protect your finger tip.
