Write A Letter Of Recommendation For A LDS Missionary Going To A Foreign Country

We were recently asked to write a letter of recommendation for our neighbor's son that will be serving a LDS mission in Brazil soon. I scoured the internet trying to find help on the best way to write this letter. I really didn't find anything so I'm writing this to help other people when they are asked to do this same thing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Paper
  • Printer
  • Time
  1. Step 1

Take good notes from the person who is asking you to write the letter of recommendation. In case the country is really foreign to you, you might ask for them to spell the name of it.

  2. Step 2

If you are ready to start typing your letter, go to your computer.

  3. Step 3

Open up whatever software you like to use to write letters/documents in. I prefer Microsoft Word.

  4. Step 4

You should first type your name, address, phone number and email address. Each on it's own line. You can choose to center these four lines.

  5. Step 5

Leave a couple spaces and then type the date.

  6. Step 6

Next type the date. This can also be centered if you choose.

  7. Step 7

Address the letter as "To Whom It May Concern:"

  8. Step 8

Now the next line will be RE: "the name of the person you're recommending". For example, RE: John Smith

  9. Step 9

    Then type Dear Madame/Sir:

  10. Step 10

The bulk of the letter now will be about the person you are recommending. You should mention how long you have known the individual and what good traits they have. Talk about their leadership skills, their moral character, any service they provided others, etc.

  11. Step 11

The main reason for a recommendation letter is for the government of that country to feel like that missionary will be an asset to their country during the time they will be serving there.

  12. Step 12

Once you are through talking about how wonderful this individual is, close your letter with "Sincerely,".

  13. Step 13

Now hit enter several times after Sincerely, so there is room for you to sign your name.

  14. Step 14

You will now type your name.

  15. Step 15

After you type your name, put your job title underneath it. The line after that should be who you work for.

  16. Step 16

You've now completed your task of writing a letter of recommendation for a LDS missionary who will be serving in a foreign country.

  17. Step 17

Print 2 copies of this and sign both of them underneath "Sincerely,". Then give these two copies to the person that asked you to recommend them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Refer to a normal letter of recommendation for spacing tips.
  • Proofread your work and then have someone else look at it too.
  • This letter of recommendation helps them to get their visa.
