How to apply for Extension Time to file U.S. Individual Income Taxes

If you know you are going to be late filing your income taxes this year, you are required to file and extension of time form in order to be in compliance. As you know the deadline for mailing your returns is before Mid-Night of April 14. Being late could cause you some problems and red tape so You should ask for an Extension of time if you want to be legal and this form will allow you another 6 months to file.

There three ways to request an automatic Extension. First go to : www.irs.org. Decide which way is the best for your situation.

Things You'll Need:

  • Time, Internet Provider, Computer, and Telephone.
  1. Step 1

    File electronically using Form 4868 Application for Extension to file by accessing to IRS.org from your personal computer or a professional income tax preparer who uses e-file.

  2. Step 2

    Pay part or all of estimated income tax due by using credit card.

  3. Step 3

    File a paper Form 4868.

  4. Step 4

    Every individual has a unique situation and should determine the best way to file. If you decide to file it by yourself either by e-Flie or paper form , read the instructions carefully and follow thru.

  5. Step 5

    If you have questions you also can call the IRS customer service no. at 1-800-829-1040. They will be very helpful to answer your questions.
