Press a Shirt
Press a Shirt

No matter what the label says, many shirts do not come out of the dryer "wrinkle free." If you want that really neat look, shirts have to be pressed. Use a steam iron, set to the temperature correct for the type of fabric. Pressing the parts of the shirt in the right order will keep the ironed parts from wrinkling as you work. Use a full size ironing board if you have the room. Steam spray each part of the shirt as you iron.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with the collar. When the iron reaches the correct temperature, place the collar of the shirt on the board, wrong side up. Press the iron' s steam button and iron firmly as you spray. Turn the collar over and iron the right side. The yoke is next. This is the back of the shirt from the collar to the seam at about shoulder blade height. Drape the shirt, right side up, over the narrow end of the board, collar at the narrow end. Steam and press the yoke, moving the shirt as you need. If you find this difficult, you can fold the shirt on the yoke seam and lay the shirt flat to iron the yoke. The back is next. Again, drape the shirt over the board, collar to the narrow end, and steam and press. Use firm pressure and move the iron slowly over the fabric. Move the shirt to press under the arms.

  2. Step 2

Now do the sleeves. Fold the sleeve along the seam, and lay it flat, smoothing the shoulder portion, and open the cuff. Iron the cuff and then the sleeve all the way to the shoulder. Turn and press the opposite side. Do the same for the second sleeve.

  3. Step 3

The left and right fronts are done last. For the side with buttonholes, lay the buttonhole edge, wrong side up, on the board. Steam and press this edge. Turn and do the right side. To iron the whole side, you need to turn the shirt and lay it on the board so the point of the board is inserted into the top of the sleeve. This will allow you to iron the upper portion of the front. Turn the shirt so you can press the lower edge of the front.

  4. Step 4

For the front portion with buttons, steam and iron the edge, wrong side up. Turn the shirt right side up and iron the front edge moving the iron AROUND the buttons. Plastic buttons can melt. Again place the shirt front so that the point of the board reaches into the top of the sleeve and iron the upper portion of the front. Turn and iron the lower portion. Hang the shirt immediately. Button the top and alternate buttons to prevent wrinkling.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have a steam iron, you can mist the shirt with water in a spray bottle. Roll it up and let it sit for twenty minutes. My mom used to put the shirt in the refrigerator while she waited.
  • Never leave a hot iron face down on the board or shirt.
  • Always unplug the iron when you are done.
