Bird feeders are nice a nice way to help care for nature, and making a home made feeder is a good project and lesson for a child. This feeder is somewhat original. Everyone makes a pinecone feeder, but how many make a bird feeder sandwich?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two baby food jar lids
  • drill
  • nut and bolt combination
  • string
  • donut or bread slices
  • peanut butter
  • birdseed (optional)
  1. Step 1

Drill a hole through each of the baby food jars to fit the bolt through. The lids will become the top and bottom of the sandwich.

  2. Step 2

Push the bolt through one of the the baby food jars. Place the donut on the bolt. If you're using bread, spread peanut butter on the bread slices and push them onto the bolt.

  3. Step 3

Add the top baby food jar. Fasten the nut onto the bolt so that the "sandwich" does not come apart. Tie the string to the bolt, just under the nut.

  4. Step 4

If you'd like to add birdseed, sprinkle the seed on the peanut-buttered bread. If using the donut, spread peanut butter over the exposed part of the donut, then sprinkle with birdseed.

  5. Step 5

Tie the string to a tree outside, and enjoy watching the birds as they come to feast! Watch for squirrels; they love this feeder as well!

Tips & Warnings
  • Stale bread and donuts work the best because they are easiest to work with.
  • Be prepared for messy fingers! Sometimes the nut can be difficult to get on to the bolt because of "peanut buttery" fingers!
  • If no animals run away with the feeder (mine always seem to be stolen by squirrels), they can be taken apart and refilled with more bread or donuts.
