Name your drives whatever you want!
Name your drives whatever you want!
Stephanie Anderson

Do you want to rename your hard drive? Perhaps you've partitioned it and want something more interesting than C and D. You'll need to be logged in as administrator, but it is no more difficult to rename a drive in Windows than it is to rename a folder or file.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • administrative access
  1. Step 1

Log in as the administrator to your computer. If there is only one account on your home computer, it probably is the administrator.

  2. Step 2

Press the start button or windows icon.

  3. Step 3

Select the computer option on the right side of the menu. In Vista, it is in the middle section below Recent Items.

  4. Step 4

You'll see your current drives (C:, D:, etc.) Right click on the one you want to change.

  5. Step 5

A small menu will open up. Select rename.

  6. Step 6

The current drive name will be highlighted and you'll be able to type in your desired drive name.

  7. Step 7

A dialog box will up that you need administrator access to do this. Click "continue" if you are sure.

  8. Step 8

Press continue on the "Windows needs your permission to continue" pop-up.

  9. Step 9

Your drive should now be renamed! Now, the only hard part is choosing the name!

Tips & Warnings
  • The C: and D: portion of the name of the drive will stay automatically. It'll mess up your computer if you change that part.
