Ground horse radish in a jar

This recipe has been in my family for 50 years. My parents used it on half shell clams, raw oysters on the half shell and for shrimp cocktails. You can increase the ingredients to allow more sauce for many more people; just double or triple the recipe.

      Heinz brand ketchup

Thoroughly wash your hands before preparing anything in the kitchen. In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine horse radish, Heinz ketchup and fresh, natural, Sunkist lemon juice.

    • 3
      Fresh natural Sunkist lemon

Stir ingredients well with a spoon or spatula or whisk. Serve with a sprig of fresh parsley if desired or decorate with a thinly sliced lemon with the peel intact. Immediately use or store in tightly closed lid container for use later.

This cocktail sauce recipe makes enough for 2 very large shrimp cocktails. The recipe can be doubled or tripled by altering the ingredients described.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use the creamed horse radish sauce. This is not flavorful enough and will not produce the good results of the ground horse radish I recommend using for this recipe.

  • Use the juice of a natural, fresh, Sunkist lemon for the greatest results.

  • While mixing, be careful not to touch the eyes with the horse radish since it burns. If you get some on your hands, wash thoroughly before your hand comes in contact with the eyes.
