Blind hemming your sewing projects is easy to do on the sewing machine when you position the fabric correctly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Allow a 1 to 3 inch hem allowance.

  2. Step 2

Fold the hem allowance to the wrong side of the garment and press out as much fullness as possible.

  3. Step 3

Mark the hem allowance the desired depth.

  4. Step 4

Finish the edge of the hem with a finish appropriate to the fabric and garment.

  5. Step 5

Pin the hem in place. Place the pins at least 1 inch from the top edge of the hem.

  6. Step 6

Fold the garment with the right sides together just below the finished edge of the hem.

  7. Step 7

Set the machine for a hemming stitch and use a blind hemming or zigzag foot. See your sewing machine owner's manual for the hemming stitch setting.

  8. Step 8

Place the garment under the foot so that the bulk of the garment is to the left of the foot.

  9. Step 9

The machine will make several straight stitches on the hem allowance and one zigzag stitch on the fold of the garment. The hem will be almost invisible from the right side of the garment if the zigzag stitch barely catches the fold of the garment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make several stitches before you thread the needle to check the garment placement.
