MySpace, the social networking giant has recently added another dimension of functionality to their site. Now visitors to your website can add your content to their profile pages.

This can quickly lead to lots of back-links for you and an increased page rank.

You simply choose which content on your site that you would like users to be able to post onto their MySpace pages and add a snippet of code that posts the MySpace icon beside it. Is anyone ready to go Viral? Read on.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Connection
  • Web Site
  1. Step 1
    Don't worry, it's nothing like this.

    Don't worry, it's nothing like this.

    Unfortunately many article hosting sites do not allow html to be posted within the article itself. To get around this issue I have hosted the instructions myself. Simply scroll down to the resources section and click on "INSTRUCTIONS".

  2. Step 2
    You won't need a book like this either

    You won't need a book like this either

    The first step is to post the corresponding code into the body section of your html. This code is clearly marked within the instructions beneath 'Step 1'.

  3. Step 3

    That done, it's time to decide where on your page you want the MySpace icon to appear. Remember that this should be an area of the page that receives a good deal of traffic. Once you've decided this insert the code referenced to in "Step 2" in the instructions document in this area of your site.

  4. Step 4

    Now you must configure the code to contain the actual information that you want to share. The parameters are:

    1). Title
    2. Content
    3). URL
    4). Location

    Note that the "Content" parameter can contain html so if your content contains images you can include it. Make sure to use the "URL" parameter. This allows you to include a working, clickable URL.

    The location parameter allows you to specify a predetermined section of the user's MySpace page that the content should be posted to. The user gets final say in this and therefor it may be better to leave this parameter blank. These are the locations in case you do decide to specify:
    * Blog
    * Bulletin
    * About Me
    * Who I'd Like to Meet
    * Interests
    * Music
    * Movies
    * Television
    * Books
    * Heroes

    That's it. You're all set! If you have some hot content sit back and wait for it to go viral.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you have tested your code get the word out! If you have a blog with a loyal list of followers make a note of the addition in the next post.
  • MySpace can only accept a max of one thousand characters which includes html. If you exceed this limit your users will receive an error message when they try to post your content.
  • Remember not to exceed a width of four hundred seventy five pixels if you are sending images. MySpace re-sizes these and they can end up looking horrid once on page if they are too large.
  • Test your new html on your own MySpace page before blogging about your sites new feature. If you don't have one then it's worth it to sign up just to do this. You only get one chance to make a good first impression. Never announce new site features unless they have been fully tested first.
