Step 1
One way to steer clear of depression is to find a healthy, constructive routine and stick to it. If you have been laid off, or you are fearing an impending lay off, the last thing you want is to fall into a deep rut of worrying and inaction. Whether it is working out, job search, or volunteering, find a way to dedicate yourself to a cause that keeps you from moping.

Step 2
Develop a plan of action. Nothing provides relief from depression like a plan of action; it helps remove feelings of anxiety and helplessness by putting the power back in your hands. Again, the plan will vary by your specific situation but it should be an attainable, feasible plan that is comprised of small attainable goals that lead you to your desired outcome.

Step 3
Take care of yourself. Even in times of great financial stress, investment in your health and the health of your family should not waiver. Do what you can to stay healthy, and do not turn to drinking or any other substance to handle feelings of depression.

Step 4
During either depression or a recession, lean on the ones you love. Fully embrace their support and do not be ashamed; by "needing" them, they learn that it's okay to need you back as well. While a recession is stressful and challenging, it can help to refocus you on the most important things in life, if you let it.
